ELAFONISSI
Pink sand and low turquoise waters, a paradise on earth!
Tour Overview
Elafonisi in southwest of Crete is famous for its pink sand and low turquoise waters.
Repeatedly this beach has been chosen to be among the world’s most beautiful. Elafonisi is an exotic place, a flat piece of land with sporadic vegetation and a great contrast to the stark bareness of the Cretan mountains. The pink sand is produced by the large amount of pink shells that get ground up by the sea.
The area is a part of the European Natura 2000 protecting program.
Wade through the low waters of the lagoon and head to the island. There are many small beaches on the south side and the further you walk the quieter it gets. The water is generally quite shallow and safe for children.
At the western end of the island there is a promontory with a small lighthouse.
For a most comfortable journey to/from Rethymno we make some stops.
Agia Sophia Cave is a place of archaeological, geological and historical interest. The small church of Agia Sophia lays at the entrance to the cave that contains many rows of massive stalactites and stalagmites.
In the traditional Cretan mountain village of Elos, you’ll find the largest number of chestnut trees on the island. The area is green and lush and most of the inhabitants are engaged in agriculture.
During the stops it will be possible to buy something to drink and eat.
Enjoy the ride through the lush Cretan landscape and a day in crystal clear waters by the exotic sandy beach of Elafonisi.
