SAMARIA GORGE
Hike through one of the world’s greatest natural wonders!
Tour Overview
Starting from Omalos at a height of 1235 m, the 16kms of wild scenery and natural beauty, as well as the Venetian and Byzantine remains of the inhabitance of the gorge, make Samaria a “must seen”. It is 150m at its widest point and 3m at its narrowest. The village of Samaria lies inside the gorge and it was finally abandoned by the last remaining inhabitants in 1962 to make way for the park and particularly as a refuge for the rare Cretan goat, Kri-Kri or Agrimi, which is largely restricted to the park.
Accompanied by your guide, you will walk down the gorge in 6-7h to Agia Roumeli, where you will have enough time to recover, have your meal or swim before taking the boat to Chora Sfakion where your bus will be waiting for you for the return to your hotel.
Crossing the gorge is a demanding physical activity. If you feel fit for the challenge, wear hiking shoes, bring a snack and prepare yourself for a beautiful nature experience. It is possible to fill up your water supply during the walk.
The Samaria Gorge is usually open to walkers from 1st of May until 15th of October-depending on the weather.
